Some people prefer the way their house or apartment looks rather than how convenient it is to live in. They prefer that their place is immaculate and showy rather than comfortable. You know the type of house I mean, the type where the bed is designer and usually white or cream, and totally uncomfortable.

Houses are meant to be lived in, to live your everyday life in, and as such you cannot expect it to be perfect all the time. A happy home is usually a slightly messy home, especially if there are kids involved, and a little mess never hurt anybody, as long as it is kept clean.

How many times have I seen beds with so many throws and ornate cushions that it must take half an hour every day just to get the bed ready to climb in? How many times have I seen kitchens which are beautifully designed with the latest expensive Italian gadgets and French cookware, which are never actually used for cooking as the owner does not want to get it dirty? If you are looking to buy a second home in a resort, say in Spain or France, you may be able to get a better deal if you buy one which is sold furnished. That is to say, all the necessities such as cutlery, crockery, beds are included in the price of the apartment or villa.

The upside is, of course, that you do not have to go to the trouble or expense of kitting out your new home. Unexpected extras are also often included such as barbecues or bicycles, which can make it even better value.

Who wants to trawl around the local supermarket or shopping centre buying everything needed to kit out a villa from scratch, particularly when you have spent your last Euro actually buying the place? (more...)
